The Top Three Must Haves: Before, During and After The Job Interview.
Have you ever for a New York second wondered why some are interviewed, some are offered the position and others not? For any given client we often receive an overwhelming response from bilingual candidates exclaiming that ‘this’ is the perfect job for them. When we sat down to conduct a search debriefing we asked our client what led them to select one over the others. Three words were noted in our after action review (AAR): energy, confidence and passion. So let’s examine these in brief detail.
Energy: if you attack every mission, every task and every assignment with great zeal, enthusiasm and profound energy then let’s talk. Why? Who doesn’t want to work w/ someone with energy that can very much light up your organizations work environment? Exactly.
Confidence: Now I’m not talking about cocky confident, I’m talking about self-confidence. Confident in your work, in your successes and that you have something to offer. If during the interview you appear the slightest impression that you are not confident in yourself, then forget it (hint: it can be learned).
Passion: you have to have an inner drive in what you’re about to embark on. If you’re applying for a college position demonstrate to the interviewing committee that your knowledgeable about their challenges and the struggles those students will face; job trends, etc. demonstrate your passion with your keen knowledge and insight.
Of course there’s the infinite and great wisdom of FDR: “Be sincere. Be brief. Be seated.” I think this one’s an excellent piece of advise as well, and could serve you well too.
