CAUSA Intern
CAUSA, Oregon – Salem, Oregon
Posted: Sep 3 – until filled, 2010

Occupation: Policy Advocacy
Address: Salem, OR 97301 Type: 20-30hrs p/week

Description: CAUSA, Oregon’s Immigrant Rights Coalition is seeking a talented and energetic intern interested in gaining experience in policy advocacy and organizing for its Fall 2010/Spring 2011 campaign for an alternative Oregon State Driver’s License.

Background: CAUSA was founded in the fall of 1995 in order to advocate against Oregon ballot measures that would have negatively impacted Oregon’s immigrant community. Since 1995, CAUSA has had a history of responding to discriminatory policies throughout Oregon. Subsequent to the Federal Real ID Act in 2005 and Oregon’s SB 1080 in 2008, current Oregon driver’s license policy creates problematic barriers for ensuring that state residents are qualified to drive, tested on their awareness of the traffic laws, and insured due to the increased requirements for documentation, including citizenship and immigration status. The law has had other effects, including lost jobs, fewer people buying auto insurance, home foreclosures and concerns that fewer people are calling for help to social service agencies and police. The intern will work under the leadership of the director and senior CAUSA organizers to promote draft legislation creating an alternative to current Oregon State Driver’s Licenses. The work of the intern will contribute to immigrant integration in the State of Oregon.

Responsibilities:
 Ability to work 20-30 hrs a week out of the CAUSA’s Salem office, including attendance of weekly CAUSA staff meeting each Monday, with stipend for mileage
Policy research on alternatives to driver’s licenses and immigrant integration issues
Communicating with a wide range of stakeholders around legislative goals and activities
Organizing visits with legislators and public education activities
Qualities/Experience Needed:
Proven interest in the areas of immigrant rights and policy advocacy
Bilingual (English/Spanish) – recommended but not required
Strong interpersonal communications skills, written and oral
Professional courtesy in all interactions (i.e., punctual, tactful, positive and upbeat, etc.)
Organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated, independent worker that can manage time efficiently
